Martial Arts Types – Karate, Jeet Kune Do, Aikido, and Kalaripayattu

There are several types of martial arts. We will be looking at some of them, including Karate and Jeet Kune do, Aikido and Kalaripayattu. All of these styles are effective, but which is the best one? If you’re new at martial arts, we recommend starting with one of these styles. Here are some differences between different types martial arts. You will need to decide what your goals are before you can choose the right style.


There are many types of martial arts. Karate is just one of these martial arts. It is also the most gentle. Tai Chi uses deflections and locking techniques to defeat its adversaries. The soft style, which combines movement with breathing, is one of the most well-known forms of exercise. Karate has also been used in MMA, or mixed martial arts, a combat sport that incorporates various forms of martial arts. Kenpo is another form of karate, which originated in Japan but has roots in Chinese martial art. Kenpo was popularized by Ed Parker, which has many variations among practitioners.

The Japanese word karate means “empty hand,” and it was originally developed in the Ryukyu Islands in the south of Japan. The art forms of Karate vary from very traditional to very contemporary, depending on who is doing it. Traditional karate, which focuses on basic strikes or blocks, can be a philosophical art. There are also many styles of karate like Shotokan-ryu or Goju-ryu.

Jeet Kune Do

Jeet Kune Do is a Korean martial art that has gained popularity over the past few decades. Bruce Lee, a martial artist, created this art. He was known as “Mo Si Ting” at his childhood. Although he was a skilled martial artist his dedication to the art earned him fame and distinction. He even named his own style of martial arts, Jeet Kune do, or “The Way of the Intercepting Fist,” in honor of himself. Bruce described it as “the art and science of fighting without fighting,” a formless form.

This martial art style requires endurance exercises, stretching, as well as joint strength exercises. To increase strength, students learn how to use kettlebells. Training in this art style also develops your ability to defend yourself in various ranges. While you will need protective gear to take part in this sport, it is well worth the investment. Jeet Kune Don training equipment is less expensive than what you would pay at a sports store.


Aikido is a form if self-defence that originated from the Japanese martial art jujitsu. Moriheiu Ueshiba was a Japanese war veteran that inspired its development. Ueshiba, a Japanese war veteran who was born in Japan 1913, learned many martial arts before settling upon aikido. He was a student of many martial arts in his early years, including jujitsu (kendo), judo, and judo. He became quite proficient in jujitsu, but quickly realized the futility of such a victory.

Aikido is a different style from traditional Asian martial art like Jujitsu and Taekwondo. All styles are focused on creating conflict from the attack by another person. While some styles emphasize the spiritual aspect, most do not. The primary aim of Aikido is to help the practitioner develop character and improve self-defense skills. Aikido is not a sport that competes in any other form of competition.


If you’ve ever seen a cartoon featuring a Kalaripayattu expert, you’ve likely seen the sport the same way. Little Kalari Warriors is based upon a martial art with Kalaripayattu practitioners. Ashwathama, The Immortal (2012); Arjun: The Warrior Prince (2010) are two other movies featuring Kalaripayattu. Although not all Kalaris use guns in their training, some do. Kalaripayattu was used in the fight scenes of the movies, and the real masters were motion-captured.

Students in the art often practice medical practices outside of their training. Many of the kalaripayattu masters are trained in traditional Indian medicine. Massages can improve flexibility and health. Ayurvedic massage is a long-standing part of the art. Kalaripayattu teachers have extensive knowledge in this area.
